Won National AAU championship at 135 pounds in 1914, representing The Cleveland Athletic Club. One of four Cleveland boxers to win titles that year. Their showing launched a highly successful era of amateur boxing in Cleveland.
One of best bantamweight fighters of the 1920s, although never given the opportunity to fight for the title. His 12-round, no-decision fight with Bantamweight Champion Eddie “Cannibal” Martin at Cleveland Public Hall in 1925 has been hailed as one of the greatest fights ever staged in Cleveland. Late in his career he scored a notable victory knocking out youthful Benny Gershe.
Member of the U.S. Curtis Cup Team in 1952 and 1954, she was runner-up for the Women’s Western in 1953 and 1954. Won seven Cleveland Women’s Gold Association championships between 1942 and 1973 and was the Ohio Women’s champion for times (1950-52-53-54). Also won the 1951 Women’s Doherty title.
Winner of back-to-back PGA titles in 1936 and 1937, a feat no golfer matched in the succeeding 40 years. Won the British Open championship in 1933, was runner-up in the 1941 U.S. Open and played for U.S. Ryder Cup Teams in 1931, ’33, ’35 and ’37. Won two Cleveland District and Ohio Open championships and five Akron Open titles. Career covered era from 1930 to 1970. Elected to PGA Golf Hall of Fame in 1957.
An all-scholastic lineman at Cleveland East Tech High in 1922 and 1923, he was hailed as one of the finest high school prospects of his time to come out of the Cleveland area. Went to Iowa State University where he collapsed and died in his first collegiate game.
Helped develop an age-group track program that was adopted nationwide by the AAU and served as Greater Cleveland Area Chairman for this AAU sport from 1959 to 1970 and nationally until 1965. Served on the CYO Girls Sports Advisory Committee from 1968 through 1979 and on the Cleveland Board of Women Officials from 1962. She was chairman of the later organization in 1969 and 1970. Honored for her volunteer work in 1978 when she was presented the CYO’s Father James O’Brien Award.
Two-time All-American at Ohio University where he captained the Bobcat wrestling team to three Mid-American Conference titles and national ranking in 1969, 1970 and 1971. Was twice named the outstanding wrestler in the league. Holds seven OU season and career records including a career dual meet mark of 36-0 and won six Lake Erie AAU championships.
Ohio high school 133-lb. champion at West Tech High in 1952 and repeated in 1953 at 138-lbs. At Ohio University he won Mid-American Conference and Four-I championships at 147 pounds in 1957 and was MAC runner-up in 1955.
Began his competitive career at Central Junior and Senior Highs, competing on the 1939 state high school championship team. Won Ohio AAU long jump titles 1942, 1944 and 1947, and as captain of the Ohio State University track team he won the NCAA long jump championship and placed second in the 220-yd. hurdles in 1944.
An All-Scholastic and All-Senate back who captained the 1923 West Tech High team to an undefeated and unscored upon season and its first Senate championship, Barclay Sanders went on to Ashland College where he started as a freshman in 1926 and was elected president of the Varsity Club. Later played for Baldwin-Wallace College, earning All Big-4 and All-Ohio honors in 1932 and again in 1933, although an injury ended the latter season for him after four games. Elected to the B-W Hall of Fame in 1978.
